Sophie Mirabella was appointed to the Shadow Cabinet in December 2009, by The Hon Tony Abbott. She was given the Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.
The portfolio is wide ranging with responsibilities covering areas such as the CSIRA, manufacturing, the textile and clothing industry and the automotive industry.
Sophie was a vocal advocate of Australian industry prior to her appointment to the portfolio and is very proud of the fact that she can continue to fight for Australian industry and Australian jobs.
Sophie's previous portfolio apoointment was Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Education, Childcare, Women & Youth in September 2008. As a mother, Sophie’s shares the concerns of many Australian families about the need to ensure that Governments at all levels provide funding for our most precious national resource – our children.
Sophie believes that the role of parents as primary educators and carers has to be recognised, supported and encouraged. She is also a strong advocate of practical programs to address violence against women and children, and supports Australian efforts to improve the life expectancy of women and children in developing countries – particularly in our region.
Sophie is extremely supportive of encouraging young Australians to have more say in the political process.
In her role as Shadow Minister, Sophie has held the Rudd and now Gillard Government to account for breaking a number of promises they made to working families and local industry before the 2007 election.
