Sophie Mirabella was appointed Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Education, Childcare, Women & Youth in September 2008. As a mother, Sophie’s shares the concerns of many Australian families about the need to ensure that Governments at all levels provide funding for our most precious national resource – our children.

Early Childhood Education & Childcare is a vital part of childhood development, with studies increasingly showing that what happens in the early childhood years is a significant determinate of future health, happiness and success.

Sophie believes that the role of parents as primary educators and carers has to be recognised, supported and encouraged. She is also a strong advocate of practical programs to address violence against women and children, and supports Australian efforts to improve the life expectancy of women and children in developing countries – particularly in our region.

Sophie is extremely supportive of encouraging young Australians to have more say in the political process.

In her role as Shadow Minister, Sophie has held the Rudd Government to account for breaking a number of promises they made to working families before the 2007 election.
