CARBON TAX CAR CRASH SWELLS TO MORE THAN $100 MILLION
17-May-2011
More secrets are out: Julia Gillard’s carbon tax threatens to wipe more than $100 million annually away from Australia’s car industry.
Revelations today that new confidential modelling for the Government advocates the introduction of a carbon price of at least $40 per tonne mean that the damage on Australia’s motor vehicle and components makers could now blow out to as much as a staggering $112 million each year.
“The Government has already broken the funding promises it made to the car industry over its years in office – but the introduction of its carbon tax will reach new depths of deceit and havoc,” Shadow Industry Minister, Sophie Mirabella, said today, after visiting Ford Australia’s Geelong manufacturing facility with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.
“The Industry Minister Kim Carr promised hundreds of millions of dollars in new assistance when his Government came to power, but he has already abolished $700 million of that funding and is now eyeing the prospect of inflicting even more carnage.
“A carbon tax will close down for Australia’s car industry destroying tens of thousands of jobs.
“No one can trust an incompetent and dishonest Government that whispers sweet nothings in workers’ ears before an election, but then proves afterwards that it takes them for mugs,” concluded Mrs Mirabella.
