GARRETT STALLS AND CRASHES ON ‘CASH FOR CLUNKERS’
Senior Labor Ministers don’t even know the name of their own unravelling ‘cleaner car’ scheme, or when it will start or end.
In a humiliating display in Question Time today, Minister Peter Garrett – representing the Industry Minister – couldn’t give the House of Representatives any information about his party’s so-called Cleaner Car Rebate.
Reports in recent days have consistently revealed that the Government is close to breaking another election promise, and ditching its absurd $429 million commitment.
It was always a bottom-of-the-barrel stunt to disguise Labor’s vacuum on climate change policy.
There have been widespread calls to abolish this dog of a scheme that will:
distort the car market and broader economy;
artificially inflate the value of used cars;
favour cheap imports over locally-made cars;
be ripe for widespread rorting and abuse; and
savagely overprice carbon abatement, with one tonne of reduced carbon priced at $429 compared with a price of less than $30 under the Government’s own shelved ETS.
It was another Garrett faux pas so bad that he didn’t even know the official program name, referring to it as ‘Cash for Clunkers’.
