“Political correctness has taken hold of the science curriculum, with Chinese traditional medicines, natural therapies, and indigenous sciences forming part of the draft curriculum,” Mrs Mirabella said.
“Excellence in the sciences, such as physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science, has taken a back seat to the political agenda of this government.”
“Science education is about building a basic tool-box to enable our students to grow and participate in the science community.”
“We can only have well informed debate and have an innovative economy when we have well trained scientists.”
“Earlier this year, the Inspiring Australia: A National Strategy for Engagement with the Sciences, presented to Science Minister Kim Carr, said a capable science workforce is a prerequisite for Australia’s future in innovation – and yet this science curriculum undermines that goal.”
The Australian Science Teachers Association has previously warned that traditional subjects suffer when there were too many choices offered.
“Despite their rhetoric preaching a back to basics approach in education, it is clear that this curriculum still favours trendy topics over traditional subjects.”
“The Coalition will further review the national curriculum and make a more detailed assessment in due course.”
“If elected, the Coalition is committed to reviewing the national curriculum.”
“The Coalition supports a national curriculum – but it has to be right curriculum.”
