TIME RUNNING OUT TO SIGN PETITION
08-September-2011
As the Gillard Government prepares to ram it’s Carbon Tax legislation through the Parliament, Member for Indi, Sophie Mirabella MP has called on locals to voice their anger and sign the anti carbon tax petition.
Mrs Mirabella has been collecting signatures from around the North East over the last month and has received an overwhelming response. Almost one thousand signatures have been collected, many of which are from residents in Wangaratta.
“I have had an overwhelming response to this petition,” said Mrs Mirabella.
“I predicted that around 80% of people that I approached would sign the petition, but it has probably been closer to 95%.
“There is a lot of anger about the Carbon Tax in the North East because local people are generally more cynical about new taxes or regulations.”
Mrs Mirabella said that she will be presenting the petition to Parliament during the next sitting fortnight while the Carbon Tax legislation is being debated.
The Government will introduce the Carbon Tax legislation next Tuesday and will seek to rush it through Parliament as quickly as possible.
In an unprecedented step, the Leader of the House, Anthony Albanese MP, has called for an immediate debate following the tabling of the bill.
“No one should think that the Carbon Tax is guaranteed to pass through the Parliament. We know that there are some very anxious members of the Labor Party who don’t like this tax. All it will take is for one of them to cross the floor, and the tax will be dead.
Mrs Mirabella has called on anyone wishing to sign the petition to call her office on 03 5721 5377 or visit her office at 117 Murphy St, Wangaratta.
