GILLARD ANNIVERSARY - A YEAR OF FAILURE AND LIES

22-June-2011

A year after the spectacular knifing of Kevin Rudd and the bloody rise of Julia Gillard, there is very little for Indi or the nation to celebrate.

This Friday will represent a year to the day since Ms Gillard told the Australian public that Labor had lost its way under Kevin Rudd. In her first press conference as Prime Minister, Julia Gillard promised to:
1.       Fix the Mining Tax
2.       Regain control of Australian borders
3.       Solve climate change

We are behind on each and every one of these issues, says Sophie Mirabella MP, Federal Member for Indi.
Mining Tax
As it stands today, Labor cannot find any sense of agreement with the West Australian Government or the Mining sector and the revised MRRT is unravelling at a rate of knots.
Stopping the Boats
Ms Gillard promised an ‘East Timor Solution’ and a regional framework during the last election campaign. That policy is now completely dead in the water and Labor has nothing more than a half baked thought bubble for an 800 for 4000 asylum seeker people swap.
Carbon Tax
Most of all, Julia Gillard’s first year as Prime Minister will be remembered for one of the greatest lies in political history. During the election campaign, Julia Gillard promised a ‘Peoples Assembly’ that would develop a ‘deep and lasting consensus’ on how to tackle climate change. Four days before the election, the Prime Minister and her Deputy explicitly ruled out a Carbon Tax under a future Labor Government.
Julia Gillard’s Carbon Tax represents a total betrayal of the Australian public and a total disregard for democracy. Labor is beholden to The Greens and we all know that Bob Brown is really calling the shots.
It is very little wonder that in a recent poll; only 13% of Australians believe the country is a better place since Ms Gillard became Prime Minister compared to 51% who believe it is a worse place*.
