SOPHIE ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO MAKE FIRST SPEECH
07-April-2011
Sophie Mirabella MP, Federal Member for Indi has encouraged students from across the North East to join the debate and enter the “My First Speech” competition.
The competition is open to students in years 10, 11 and 12 who will be asked to write a 3 minute speech as if it was their first speech to Parliament.
“This is a great chance for local students in the North East to showcase their talent,” said Mrs Mirabella.
“I can remember my first speech to Parliament and it was very exciting and very humbling. I am sure there are hundreds of students from across the North East that would be very talented public speakers, so I am hopeful that we can generate some local interest in the competition.”
Students can write about an issue or issues they think important, whether it’s personal, local, national or even global. Entrants will need to video their speech and send in a CD or DVD of their speech, along with a written copy, to the House of Representatives for judging.
“There is a huge range of issues that students could potentially talk about, so I look forward to seeing some of the entries myself.”
Anyone who is interested in participating can visit the competition website at http://www.aph.gov.au/exhibitions/myfirstspeech/ or contact the office of Sophie Mirabella MP on 03 5721 5377.
