- Leigh Johansen, Benalla West Primary School - 2008 Bicycling Achievement Award
- Tiarna Borleis, Beechworth – 2009 Simpson Prize Runner Up
“The Victorian Hotel is a popular and respected local business within the Rutherglen Community and right through the North-East and beyond. I want to congratulate the owners of the Victorian Hotel, Sean and Sarah Morris, they are most definitely very deserving of this award.”
“They offer a variety of services and information assisting cyclists in planning their cycling trip and offer practical assistance on the ground. I have great confidence that this new concept will be an example for other hotels in the NE in helping to attract and make cyclists welcome,” Mrs Mirabella said.
Mrs Mirabella also congratulated local Benella West Primary School student Leigh Johansen on receiving the award also.
“Local Primary School student from Benalla West Leigh Johnson has also been presented the award which acknowledges his practical efforts to promote and encourage cycling to school.”
Mrs Mirabella signalled out Tiarna Borleis from Beechworth Secondary College for her award as a “Runner-Up” in the 2009 Simpson Prize.
The Simpson Prize is a competition focussing on the Australian Anzac tradition and is managed by the History Teacher’s Association of Australia on behalf of the Australian Government.
“I congratulate Tiarna on her award which highlights her thoughtful contribution and comments on WW1. This is a great award for her and I wish her all the very best in her endeavours,” Mrs Mirabella said.
“I look forward to meeting with her when she is in parliament house to receive her award,” Mrs Mirabella concluded.
