Mirabella Keeps up the Fight on MDB Plan

26-January-2011

Sophie Mirabella MP, federal member for Indi has vowed to keep up the fight against the proposed guide to the draft Murray Darling Basin Plan.

Mrs Mirabella responded strongly to criticisms that she could not attend a public forum in
Shepparton last Friday, noting that she has been working tirelessly behind the scenes.

“I have been living and breathing the Murray Darling Basin Plan since its release last October,” Mrs Mirabella said.

“I have made a formal written submission to both the House of Reps and Senate Parliamentary Inquiries, I have arranged meetings in Canberra with Minister Burke, Minister Crean and Tony Windsor and I have been consulting with local farmers, businesses and Local Government. I held a series of meetings with the chairman of the Murray Darling Basin Authority and I will be giving evidence to the public hearings in Canberra.

“It’s disappointing that the Parliamentary Inquiry have decided to not visit North East Victoria because we are the source of the water. But I will be seeking to give evidence at the hearings in Canberra and I will continue to lobby on behalf of all North East residents.

“My position has been clear from day one – in its current format, this plan will destroy our region. I will use every ounce of effort in my body to ensure that we get a fair deal – I have done until now and I will continue to do so in the future.
