TONY BURKE FINALLY ACCEPTS MIRABELLA’S INVITATION

17-November-2010

Wednesday, 17 November 2010

A delegation representing 7 North East Victorian councils have met with Federal Water Minister Tony Burke to discuss local impacts of the proposed Murray Darling Basin Plan.
Mrs Mirabella said she was “pleased Mr Burke had finally accepted my invitation to consult with concerned locals”. The delegation, which represented 7 key Local Government Authorities in the North East Victoria, included Federal Member for Indi – Sophie Mirabella MP, CEO of the Rural City of Wangaratta - Doug Sharp, Mayor of the Rural City of Wangaratta – Cr Anthony Griffiths and John Brown from Brown Brothers wineries.
Cr Griffiths was pleased with the outcome of the meeting, stating “it is important that our region has a strong voice in this process and that our voice is heard directly by the Minister responsible.
“In its current form, this plan poses significant threats to the future of our region. We have unique and particular issues, being as we are at the point of the water source. It is vital that we do everything we can to ensure we are getting the best possible outcome that recognises efficiency of using water closest to the source. We clearly spelt out our case to Mr Burke, and were encouraged by his response. He has asked that we continue to engage in the process and we plan to do just that.”
Mr Sharp noted that the plan in its current form was unacceptable. “If the proposed cuts were to go ahead as they are currently stated, it would do untold damage to the economy and the health of our communities. As it stands the Murray Darling Basin Guide effectively wipes out irrigation in the Ovens and puts at risk agricultural productivity. We don’t think this was the intention.
“That is why it was so important to meet face to face with the Minister today, to explain the challenges we are facing and to work towards a more suitable outcome. I am happy that Mr Burke took the time to see us and I feel positive that he has taken our concerns on board.”
Mr Brown said the impacts of this plan would be far reaching. “We only get one shot at this, and if we don’t get it right our agricultural strength and potential will be seriously diminished. If it means we have to come to Canberra and speak straight to the Minister then that’s what we should be doing. Today’s meeting went well, and I look forward to working further with the Government and the Authority.
Mrs Mirabella was pleased that Mr Burke set aside time to speak with the delegation and encouraged further engagement in the process.
“The Authority has acknowledged that the North East faces “perverse outcomes”, and it’s important that the Minister and the Government share this understanding.
“At the end of the day, it’s the Minister’s decision. That’s why it was so important that this delegation had the opportunity to meet with Mr Burke today. Mrs Mirabella concluded.
