LABOR FAILS FAMILIES AGAIN

02-June-2010

In a desperate penny pinching move, the Rudd Labor Government has slashed occasional care funding by $12.6 million over four years.

The funding helps to provide short term child care for people on low incomes and working families and will make occasional child care unaffordable for many low income families.

It could also lead to the closure of some occasional child care services in the North East.

“This is a heavy blow to some of most disadvantaged families in the North East,” Federal Member for Indi, Sophie Mirabella said.

“The Rudd Government has slashed the funding without rationale or reason. They have basically said, ‘No, we’re not interested in Occasional Child Care and we’re not going to fund this anymore.’

“At the same time, $1billion is being wasted fixing their home insulation debacle. This is where the money is going.

“This is a Government that is struggling to pay the bills and has an appalling track record on breaking promises.

“Last month they broke their promise to build 222 child care centres, they have broken promises on computers in schools, they have wasted valuable money on overpriced school halls and there isn’t a thought for the children involved.

“I can understand the disappointment of working families who put their faith in the Rudd Government.”
