INDI LEADS THE WAY FOR COALITION GREEN ARMY – CALL FOR IDEAS

06-May-2010

Two projects in the Federal Electorate of Indi will launch the Coalition’s Green Army, a program designed to put the Coalition’s environmental words into action, Sophie Mirabella said today.

The announcement came at a forum on the environment held in Wodonga last night (Wednesday May 5, 2010) where Shadow Minister for Environment, Greg Hunt, was guest speaker.

“It is an enormous thrill to be the first electorate in Australia to be allocated the first two programs,” Mrs Mirabella said.

“It shows not only to our residents, but to the whole of Australia that the people of Indi care about their environment and want direct action to maintain it, not just new taxes.

“Now that we have been recognised as potential leaders in environmental sustainability, I am calling on all locals to submit detailed suggestions about how to apply these two Green Army projects.

“The Coalition believes that the best ideas come from local communities, and I would urge any organisations or individuals with a solid project idea to put it forward and my office will send it through to the Coalition leadership team.”

The Green Army will be implemented by a Tony Abbott-led Coalition government and will build on the excellent work of the Howard Government’s Green Corps program, Mrs Mirabella said.

“The big difference is that the Green Army won’t be a training and work readiness program. It will be made up of a workforce which can hit the ground running and get into the nuts and bolts of environmental management, making a real difference,” she said.

“The diversity of the natural environment in the Indi electorate is bound to throw up a number of fantastic ideas and I am really looking forward to seeing them.

“It is a hallmark of the Coalition that such importance projects are built from the grass roots, from the community, and I am thrilled that Indi has been selected as the leader in this area.”
