CARR MUTE WHILE MANUFACTURING JOBS TO DISAPPEAR
05-May-2010
The Rudd Government’s inability to make tough decisions in the national interest has been exposed again with its introduction of a massive tax slug on Australia’s resources industry and the inevitable blow to Australian manufacturing.
“There hasn’t been a word from Minister Carr on how the many industries which rely on mining, such as steel fabrication, pipe and pump manufacturers and the like, are going to be hit,” Shadow Minister for Industry, Sophie Mirabella said.
“Instead of setting up the Australian economy to be competitive, the Government will destroy jobs and risk Australia’s international competitiveness by ensuring our minerals sector is more heavily taxed than any of its rivals around the world.”
“It will also punish a long line of dependent industries, especially the manufacturing sector and contractors.
“And if the resource companies are going to be slugged with a new tax, what is that going to do to the billions they put into various research and development projects?
“It’s Senator Carr’s job to stand up for Australian industry – but he has so far had nothing to say about the Henry Review. No apology for the decrease in blue collar jobs, no apology for the damage caused to the manufacturing sector.
“This big new tax on mining shows Mr Carr and Labor have no vision for Australian manufacturing and the families which it employs.”
