27-February-2009
Federal Liberal member for Indi, Mrs Sophie Mirabella MP today welcomed $417,550 in funding from the Federal Government to help protect Indi from the threat of flooding.
Funding from the Natural Disaster Mitigation Program will be allocated towards the following projects:
- $255,550 to the Strathbogie Shire Council for the Euroa Water Management Scheme
- $142,000 to the Alpine Shire Council for the Myrtleford Flood mitigation Scheme
- $20,000 to the City of Wodonga for a flood study of Middle Creek
“This funding will allow the Strathbogie Shire to undertake final works of the Euroa Water Management Scheme,” Mrs Mirabella said.
“This scheme encompasses survey works to refine the hydraulic model the flood maps are based on, revising the flood inundation maps, updating flood plans and will include some levee construction.”
“The Natural Disaster Mitigation Program (NDMP) was enhanced by the former Coalition Government to assist local councils and other organisations invest in practical mitigation measures to withstand the impact of natural disasters,” Mrs Mirabella said.
“The NDMP heralded a policy shift in focus towards more cost-effective, evidence-based disaster mitigation which looked beyond simply disaster response and reaction, but focussed efforts towards anticipation, mitigation and prevention.”
“Funds are available for a range of measures that contribute to safer, sustainable communities better able to withstand the effects of natural disasters,” Mrs Mirabella concluded.
