KANCOONA COMMUNICATIONS BLACK HOLE

14-October-2009

Sophie Mirabella MP, Member for Indi, is continuing to fight for the residents of Kancoona.

“It is unacceptable that some communities in Indi do not have access to any suitable means of communication as we approach what appears to be another dangerous bushfire season.  The people of Kancoona need radio and mobile phone coverage at a minimum.”

“I have requested Senator Conroy, the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy ensure the people of Kancoona have access to crucial communications services as a matter of urgency.”

“This year I have made a number of representations to the Minister on behalf of people and communities in Talgarno, Thologolong, Walwa, Tawonga South, Freeburgh, Rosewhite, Stanley, Strathbogie, and Woods Point.  The people in these communities do not have, or have only limited access to: radio reception, mobile telephone coverage, television reception, and broadband services.  The Minister’s responses to date have been inadequate,” said Mrs Mirabella.

“I hope and expect that the Minister will now action a plan to ensure the people of Kancoona, and all of Indi, have access to vital communication services.”

“Our region has suffered the devastating consequences of bushfires in 2003, 2006 and most recently Black Saturday, 7 February this year.  I will fight to ensure that we have access to the communications services that are vital to surviving the challenges and threats this summer will bring,” concluded Mrs Mirabella.
