Mirabella Calls for Freight Subsidy for Bushfire Regions

13-February-2009

Federal Liberal Member for Indi, Sophie Mirabella MP has called for the establishment of a freight subsidy for farmers impacted by the recent bushfires in Victoria.

“Following our local and other representations, yesterday, the Minister for Agriculture, the Hon. Tony Burke MP, extended Exceptional Circumstances (EC) drought assistance for our local regions,” Mrs Mirabella said.

“There also needs to be strong consideration given to establishing a freight subsidy for fodder and for the movement of stock to other areas.”

“I have spoken with a number of local farmers who feel this is an appropriate form of assistance to save the livelihoods of our local farmers and landholders during these incredibly tough times,” Mrs Mirabella said.

“Locally, I know that Stephen Street has been co-ordinating the effort of the movement of hay, fodder and stock for those farmers impacted by the fires, but some assistance from the government in the form of a freight subsidy would go a long way towards helping local farmers get back on their feet.”

“I welcomed yesterday’s announcement that Minister Burke had extended the EC assistance that was due to expire in March for another 12 months. This gives our local farmers the certainty they require to plan for the future.”

“But there is a more immediate threat on the ground to our local farmers, and a freight subsidy to those impacted would be the best way of assisting those in need.”

“I have written to Minister Burke to outline the situation faced by those on the ground, and have urged him to carefully consider this proposal for our farmers,” Mrs Mirabella concluded.
