Anzac Day 2009
23-April-2009
ANZAC Day, 25th April, marks an important day in the nation’s history and is an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifice, bravery and spirit of those who lost their lives, Federal Member for Indi, Sophie Mirabella MP said today.
Those who served and returned and those currently serving in conflict and peacekeeping missions are in our hearts and minds today.
“The ANZAC spirit that was evident at Gallipoli will be strongly felt today as Australians attend local services to commemorate this special occasion,” Mrs Mirabella said.
ANZAC forces landed at Gallipoli on 25 April, 1915, and met with fierce resistance; signalling the start of a bloody campaign that was to last over eight months.
“As we pay tribute to those we have lost, we honour the unique character of our nation’s brave men and women who gave their all in the name of this great country and for the freedom and way of life we value and enjoy today,” Mrs Mirabella said.
“The courage, tenacity and mateship that the original Anzacs displayed have continued to be shown by Australians who have served in subsequent conflicts.”
“We will never forget their sacrifice,” Mrs Mirabella said.
“In these uncertain economic times it is more important than ever that Australians pull together and display the qualities that we are so famous for – mateship, generosity, loyalty and courage – these are the qualities epitomised by the Anzacs.”
“Anzac Day is our chance to let our servicemen and women – past and present – know that their service is remembered, appreciated and honoured and for servicemen and women to remember their mates.”
Mrs Mirabella encouraged all North-East residents and families to participate in ANZAC Day commemorations; to truly feel the spirit of the ANZACS and gain an insight into what their sacrifice meant.
